- Nominator's rationale: WP:SMALLCAT recent proliferation of tiny categories with unusual and irrelevant hierarchical organization. Wikipedia:Category naming does not provide for by region encapsulating by country.
- Summary: Convoluted tree, entangled with others, very few articles. Redundantly, Europeans are of European descent.
- Note that although Latin American and South American have already been deleted, a new parallel arises under Carribean.
- Note that although Asian and African have already been deleted, 2 new parallels under Arab and Middle Eastern. None of these are actually "Arab", rather they speak Arabic-language. So this runs into a somewhat racist stereotypical grouping by language, not continent.

- Answer: Eventually. I've been working on the prefix side, an hour or so per day. There were so many crosslinks and entanglements, that is complicated. As seen above, that reaches into the suffix side too. Moreover, that stalled (relisted) when not enough folks supported. Once that is cleared up, and a suitable guideline written, it should be easier to handle the suffix side. Also, there are parts that were never well-connected to the rest, so search and destroy will be necessary.

Category:Academics who falsely claimed minority ancestry

- Nominator's rationale: I am doubtful about the propriety of this category. I stumbled upon it when it was linked from Elizabeth Warren's page. As far as I can see, it appears to be a collection of disparate incidents. For example, the BethAnn McLaughlin and Science Femme articles more properly describe hoaxes, rather than an identifiable individual claiming minority ancestry. Others, such as Gina Adams are unproven and therefore potential WP:BLP violations, since the category uses the word "falsely" in Wikipedia's voice. In my view, this category is not so useful as to overcome the potential BLP and COATRACK problems it raises. MediaKill13 (talk) 10:21, 26 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
- Delete, not a defining characteristic. Marcocapelle (talk) 12:54, 26 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
- Retain or Modify the category name. It may not be seen by some as a narrowly defining characteristic, but it is a point that is often raised about her. She has now ceased making the claim, but the story is still well know. She did make the claim (to the Texas Bar Association, and reportedly to Harvard) and she now admits it is not supported by facts. So, the category does fit, even though she may prefer the topic be forgotten. How do other editors see this issue? Delete, Retain, or maybe have the category renamed something like "Academics who incorrectly claimed minority ancestry"? Full disclosure: I was the one created the category in question. - Delete - same as Marco, nothing defining, nor intrinsic here, which is to say that one cannot make such a (false) claim - one is what ones feel (s)he is and/or choses to be.--౪ Santa ౪99° 18:18, 26 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
- People can claim/feel anything, but certain facts can be verified or falsified, and these facts can be very important claims in academia, in getting hired, promoted, or recognized; also, these claims can affect how a person's ideas are received. It is not enough to feel or choose identities in these circles. That is why these people have been terminated. Facts are important. Pete unseth (talk) 20:32, 26 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
- Both ethnic and national identity are synthetic - nothing intrinsic here. You can only claim and prove that some one has particular citizenship, there is no blood-test for being ethnic English or of Germy nationality. ౪ Santa ౪99° 20:11, 27 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
- This being said, yes, we can make distinction between, say, European and Far-East Asian, or African or Paleo-Americans, but broad categorization based on "false claim of minority ancestry" because someone dared to claim has one part in five Cherokee heritage is unnecessary because it is hardly defining (it's hard to expect someone to claim they are of Black African heritage if they are obviously settler-colonist white Afro-German, or some such example). ౪ Santa ౪99° 20:34, 27 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
- Delete — WP:BADIDEA WP:NOTSCANDAL inconsistent garbage with WP:BLPGOSSIP specious purpose to defame or denigrate. Note that Elizabeth Warren did not lose her job, the incident was WP:NOTDEFINING (not considered important to anybody). Note this doesn't include Craig Chapman the perpetrator, rather it has the hoax Science Femme.

- Delete. WP:RIGHTINGGREATWRONGS come to mind, and is often a bad idea. Place Clichy (talk) 14:55, 27 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
- Modify. There is a place for something about this, as long as it's proven; BUT, I don't think it's so much about "minority ancestry" but about status, and those who exploit affirmative action and similar policies. It's been happening a lot in Academia in Canada, and to some extent in the US. But the policies being violated are not the same in both countries. We have similar contentious categories, about which similar arguments have been made to delete. Again, it needs a better name and for editors to just be careful with application. - CorbieVreccan ☊ ☼ 21:38, 30 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
