- Nominator's rationale: Per WP:SMALLCAT and, possibly, WP:NARROWCAT. Could also speedy delete per containing only a single eponymous article. Doug Mehus (talk) 21:40, 25 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
- Thank, @Marcocapelle:, though I wonder if we shouldn't be using the verbiage merge for what is effectively a delete and upmerging of the articles contained in the to-be-deleted category into the parent or related category? Reason I say this is because I noticed XfD closing admin @MER-C: closed two categories I nominated as merge and upmerged the contents, but the categories now still exist as empty categories. Friendly pinging MER-C so he/she can clarify the procedures.--Doug Mehus (talk) 18:21, 26 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

- Nominator's rationale: Germanic is a language family. It is not an ethnicity. There is very little in common between the various diasporas from countries with languages in the Germanic family when they are in diaspora. There wouldn't be any venue or cultural element bringing together people from Afrikaner, Luxembourgian, English, Swiss and Norwegian diaspora. Therefore I think this container category is unnecessary, if not misleading. Nominated for deletion because all its content is already in another sub of Category:Germanic peoples. - The result of the discussion was: Withdrawn after it was removed from a few previous subcategories. Other issues, like renaming and category tree structure were also addressed to satisfaction of the nominator. Involved, non-admin closure, in view of consensus and withdrawal of this nomination.Debresser (talk) 22:12, 29 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
- Nominator's rationale: Recently-created parent category for Ashkenazi Jews topics, Romaniote Jews topics and Sephardi Jews topics. Article Minhag explains that "
Minhag is an accepted tradition or group of traditions in Judaism.
" If these groups of traditions are essentially identical to what is covered in Category:Jewish ethnic groups, then the categories should probably better be merged (per WP:OVERLAP and WP:OVERLAPCAT). If they are not, then Ashkhenazi, Romaniote and Sephardi umbrella categories should not be found there. @Bohemian Baltimore: courtesy ping creator. Place Clichy (talk) 14:48, 25 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
- Comment - there is also a Category:Nusachs for a related concept. Minhag § Nusach seems to use the words interchangeably. This is another possible merge target, for instance as Category:Minhagim and nusachim, which may itself be a subcategory of Category:Jewish ethnic groups. Place Clichy (talk) 15:09, 25 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
- Comment - @User:Place Clichy, Thanks for the ping. Minhagim and ethnicity are not the same thing. There are African-Americans Jews and Romani Jews (Gypsy Jews), but as far as I know there is no African-American minhag or Romani minhag. Some can also be of a particular minhag Ashkenazi/Sephardi/etc without being of that ethnicity. When a Jewish woman marries a Jewish man, she adopts his minhag. I know many Ashkenazi women who married Sephardi men and became Sephardi by minhag, and vice versa. Bohemian Baltimore (talk) 10:17, 27 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
- I agree with the previous editors that Ashkenazi Jews topics, Romaniote Jews topics and Sephardi Jews topics don't really belong here, but that is no reason to delete a perfectly valid category.
- I agree that the three articles about specific minhagim should also be in an ethnic category. It is however completely natural that an article about "Minhag Morocco" is both in an ethnic category for "Moroccan Judaism" e.g. and in the minhagim category. Much like an article about Asimov would have to be in a "writers" category and an "Americans" category (if there were no "American writers" category).
- I'd like to ask User:Marcocapelle to reconsider his opinion in light of the above argument. Debresser (talk) 15:51, 26 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
- I would like to thank everyone is this discussion for their thoughtful and balanced comments. Having considered the issue, I agree with the removal of the Ashkenazi/Sephardi/etc "topics" sub-categories. I would agree with keeping the category and having it strictly for the articles about minhagim (Palestinian, Moroccan, and so forth). Sometime in future, I'm planning to populate the category with articles about other minhagim, such as the Polish and German and Dutch minhagim. @User:Debresser, if you had any interest in working on further articles on minhagim, that would be more than welcome. Best to all. Bohemian Baltimore (talk) 10:26, 27 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
- I agree that once the overall categories for Ashkhenazi/Sephardi/Romaniote topics have been removed, the biggest problem with these categories is solved. Evidently, an dedicated article or subcategory can be both in this category and in the specific culture category, e.g. Sephardic law and customs or Nusach Ashkenaz. However there still seems to be a large overlap with Category:Nusachs, with much content in common: Sephardic law and customs and Palestinian minhag are in both categories, and article Nusach Ashkenaz uses 'Minhag' all along. Do you think a merger into Category:Minhagim and nusachim would be appropriate? Place Clichy (talk) 14:43, 27 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
- A nusach is part of a minhag. A minhag is comprised of such things as specific customs, wearing certain clothing, a certain way in deciding questions of Jewish law, and an important part is the nusach of that minhag. Therefore, I think that putting "Minhagim and nusachim" on a par would be incorrect. Debresser (talk) 21:59, 27 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
- If articles use minhag and nusach incorrectly, we should fix that. By the way, the Palestinian minhag article is almost completely about the Palestinian nusach, with as good as nothing about all the other things that together make a minhag. Debresser (talk) 22:02, 27 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
- Should Category:Nusachs then be a subcategory of Category:Minhagim? Place Clichy (talk) 01:49, 28 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
- Also not. Just like "provinces" should not be part of "countries", even though a provinces make up a country. Debresser (talk) 18:22, 28 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
- Fine, I am satisfied with the outcome of the discussion and withdraw the nomination. I'm still placing horizontal see also links to both categories for clarity. Place Clichy (talk) 20:18, 29 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
