- The result of the discussion was: do not merge. MER-C 09:36, 30 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
- Nominator's rationale: Very small category. clearly two names for the same thing. Expatriates in Ireland has 51 subcategories. They are not divided according to time - some were in Ireland when it was governed by Britain and some after 1922. Main category is Category:Irish people, not Republic of Ireland people. Rathfelder (talk) 13:52, 13 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
- Keep per WP:IRE-CATS. Marcocapelle (talk) 07:21, 14 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
- Oppose per Oculi's arguments. Dimadick (talk) 10:18, 14 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
- Keep per WP:IRE-CATS Laurel Lodged (talk) 12:32, 14 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
- Keep -- We have long split Irish categories into NI and RoI, except in relation to all-Ireland institutions. Peterkingiron (talk) 17:29, 14 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
- Support We consistently use Ireland/Irish to specifically refer to the country.John Pack Lambert (talk) 22:14, 21 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
- Support merge. Supporters of "Republic of Ireland" widely disregard the fact that Category:Expatriates in Ireland currently has 59 subcategories, no less, for expatriates in Ireland (the country) that are titled "Ireland", including the likes of British, English, Scottish and Welsh expatriate sportspeople in Ireland. Most other categories such as Category:Canadian expatriates in Ireland, Category:Canadian expatriate sportspeople in Ireland or Category:Fijian expatriate sportspeople in Ireland where articles regarding the main country are placed in the root category, and NI content is placed in a "Northern Ireland" subcategory. This seems to indicate, unsurprisingly, that "Ireland" is widely understood, in an expatriate category tree, as the country, as for Ambassadors (enforced in this CfD). This was also a very stable situation until recent changes on April 13. Either the ugly "Republic of Ireland" is enforced everywhere, or we can come back to the long-term stable situation for the 2 affected category pages. Place Clichy (talk) 17:37, 23 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

- Are you sure it applies here? The more generic WP:IRE-IRL guideline explicitely states that "Ireland" should be used for the state
where the state forms a major component of the topic (e.g. on articles relating to states, politics or governance)
, which was the major rationale for the Foreign relations of Ireland CfD and is also the case here for "expatriates". Also, you do not address the fact that a keep result would not establish the stable situation you seem to imply as most expatriates in Ireland categories are currently using "Ireland" for the country, and have for some time until April 2019. - Nominator's rationale: This contains one subcategory: American expatriates in the Kingdom of Great Britain, which had one article, about an American who was actually living in Scotland. I dont think a proliferation of subcategories about the various legal forms of what is now the UK is very helpful. The existence of the geographical subcategories of the UK enable us to avoid this. Rathfelder (talk) 10:53, 13 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
- Ancient Rome was, apart from any other consideration, geographically different from the present Republic of Italy. An approach that is sensible in one context may not work in another.Rathfelder (talk) 12:39, 13 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

- Nominator's rationale: I know nothing about golf in the US, but this 1-member category feels like WP:OCAWARD Le Deluge (talk) 09:41, 13 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
- Delete for Now I assumed the one article would be about the award, not just a single person who recieved it. Maybe a main article could help establish defining-ness, I'm not sure. But right now this category is not aiding navigation in any sense. RevelationDirect (talk) 01:48, 15 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

- Nominator's rationale: merge, we usually do not have century categories for countries that did not exist yet. In the Middle Ages Algeria often belonged to Islamic states centered in current Morocco or Tunisia. The Regency of Algiers, established in 1515, can be regarded as the earliest form of Algeria as a separate country. Marcocapelle (talk) 06:19, 13 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

- Nominator's rationale: Per WP:SUBJECTIVECAT, WP:NPOV, and WP:OCAWARD
- The Cuban Baseball Hall of Fame can refer to three separate organizations:
- A. Original Pre-Revolution: 1939-1961 in Havana, inducted a mix of All Cubans, minor, major, Negro league players
- B. Exile in United States: 1962-1986, 1997-1998 in Miami, focused on Major League players.
- C. Official Revival: 2014 in Havana, focused on Cuba national baseball team players. Having trouble finding later years.
- The Exile and Revival ones both recognize inductees by the Original, but they definitely don't recognize each other. While all the inducted players have great athletic skills, perceived political allegience and emigration decisions also appear to be factors for admission. This Wikipedia category covers the Original and the Official Revival (but not the Exile one) which effectivley is taking a political position. One possible solution would be to split this into three categories but none of the three awards seem particularly defining in the articles and these competing claims by rival organizations are better handled in the article space. The contents of the current category are already listified here in the main article. - RevelationDirect (talk) 02:25, 13 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
