The version history of Android OS began on 21 October 2008. The mobile operating system, developed by the Open Handset Alliance and primarily Google, has seen 5 major revisions with the most recent (v2.2 entitled Froyo) released on 20 May 2010.
The issue of fragmentation has been seen as a major problem with the Android system;[citation needed] there are currently 4 major versions on the market. This is often attributed to the modifications made by the manufacturers, including suites such as HTC Sense and Motoblur.
The next version of Android- v3.0- is to be called Gingerbread, and expected to be released late 2010.[citation needed]
