"Kn" spelling

[edit]

What is the origin of the "Kn" spelling of words like knife, knelt and knew? Drutt (talk) 16:15, 23 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

it used to be pronounced that way. 220.253.132.190 (talk) 09:55, 16 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Maybe ^ should be inserted in the "see also" of the article (I won't dare...), and if ^^ could be sourced. 85.72.165.167 (talk) 00:58, 4 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Letter N from Egyptian N ?

[edit]

Have you not considered that the letter N may have come from the egyptian hieroglyph that looks like /\/\/\/\ which just by coincidence happens to represent the sound 'N' ? in case you don't see it: /\/\/\/\ -> /\/ —Preceding unsigned comment added by 85.96.122.245 (talk) 11:30, 26 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Have a look at M. —Tamfang (talk) 18:32, 26 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
You have put the hieroglyph for J (snake) next to Ns because they REMOTELY look alike? and the hieroglyph N next to Ms because they look like.. but not considered mentioning the hieroglyph of N next to other symbols of N? where both the sounds and symbols match? 85.96.122.245 (talk) 15:48, 27 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Not so much because they look alike (though I gotta say the Proto-Semitic 'n' shown here resembles the J-snake a lot less REMOTELY than it resembles the water-sign) but because there is a plausible hypothesis that the Phoenicians took a symbol for the first sound of the Egyptian word for 'snake' and used it instead for the first sound of their own word for 'snake'. —Tamfang (talk) 19:13, 27 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Consistency across wikipedia, key info: Wiktionary, disambig, maths and stats

[edit]

I want to point out there's a bit of difficulty with the mathematecal and statistical uses of n, which isn't entirely clean, clear and cosistent between this article, the disambig page, wiktionary and the linkage with relevant maths and statistics articles. But it is of quite some interest and need to get clear. I think the disambig page and this were the most informative for me, and the oxford dictionary online page. The difference between sample size, or being the variable, roman numeral for zero, it's all quite crucial. Kathybramley (talk) 17:16, 19 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Cursive capital N

[edit]

The shape of the capital cursive is odd. Shouldn't it be like this? https://loopsandtails.com/cursive/nn/ — Preceding unsigned comment added by Vladimir Boskovic (talkcontribs) 19:31, 12 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Boolean logic upside down U (as a type of n?)

[edit]

Should symbols that look like a n be included? In Boolean logic/algebra there is a symbol that looks like a upside down U. Include this here? Text mdnp (talk) 01:55, 3 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Not done: it's not clear what changes you want to be made. Please mention the specific changes in a "change X to Y" format and provide a reliable source if appropriate. ~ Eejit43 (talk) 14:59, 20 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Big formating problem

[edit]

I don't have any experience editing charts, but as it is right now, there is a massive gap in the "history" section, it is my opinion that they gap is bigger than necessary and the offending charts should be reformatted to take up less space QueenElizebethlll (talk) 19:12, 16 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

On further examination it seems that most of the letter articles suffers from this poor formatting QueenElizebethlll (talk) 19:15, 16 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
