The introduction talks more about what it isn't rather than giving a clear definition. Propose merging most of the talk of what it isn't and adding a simple english definition with description of practical meaning. Actioned. Removed a lot of garbage qualifiers (e.g "worse still") and redundant content. Tried to preserve anything with meaning in close to its initial phrasing, so things are still too verbose for my liking. If you believe I have removed something important please ensure it is cited before restoring. Propose deleting content I cannot easily find citations for in next edit, mainly anything that appears to be WP:OR, and revisiting a simple english definition. I would appreciate a review of the edited first paragraph regarding definitions.

what do the variables in the equations represent? specifically the V*O2 - is that the rate of O2 flow?
