Forty years ago, on April 24, 1967, cosmonaut Vladimir Mikhaylovich Komarov (Russian: Владимир Михайлович Комаров) was killed when his Soyuz 1 spacecraft crashed during its attempted landing. This was the first in-flight fatality in the history of spaceflight.
