This help page is obsolete. It assumes that the reader has arrived by clicking the link on a {{New user bar}} template and wants to upload a self-portrait on a user page. However, the Account Creation Improvement Project is marked ""historical" and no new user pages are formatted with that template. It is unfortunate that new editors are still finding this page. I would redirect it, but it is linked from the 56,000 user pages that were created with {{New user bar}}. -- John of Reading (talk) 07:02, 10 June 2017 (UTC)

Please replace
'''[[Special:MyPage/Sandbox|<span style="color:#{{#ifeq:{{SUBPAGENAME}}|Sandbox|fcfcfc|000}};">My test area</span>]]'''</td>
with
'''[[Special:MyPage/sandbox|<span style="color:#{{#ifeq:{{SUBPAGENAME}}|Sandbox|fcfcfc|000}};">My test area</span>]]'''</td>
(changing Special:MyPage/Sandbox to Special:MyPage/sandbox). Per Help:My sandbox, the default sandbox location is /sandbox, not /Sandbox. This is the same change as was demonstrated in Special:Diff/892393179. Thanks, --DannyS712 (talk) 23:23, 23 April 2019 (UTC)

I ended up here at random and I was confused about the purpose of this page, especially because of the heading in the imperative mood:
Upload an image that you own now.
Looking at the history, that heading was changed in revision 963357787 and used to be:
Upload an image of yourself now.
With the edit summary:
Changing wording to avoid the ridiculous impression that we are encouraging people to add photos of themselves for no valid purpose
Which made me more confused since the page also says "To add the image to your user page ..." and it's used in Template:New user bar, where the context is:
Click here to add an image of yourself (optional).
So it seems like that revision was done in error. This page actually is about adding an image of yourself. To be sure, I checked What links here and filtered by namespace to ignore all the user pages, but didn't see any other notable pages.
So, I'm requesting:
from:
Upload an imagethat you own now.
to:
Upload an image of yourself
Changing "that you own" to "of yourself" to clarify the purpose of this page.
As well, the period should be removed so that it's not in the imperative mood. Headings shouldn't be punctuated anyway.
Also, in my opinion, the "now" is unnecessary.
from:
This is how you addanimage into Wikipedia:
to:
This is how you add your image into Wikipedia:
Since this page is specifically about adding an image of yourself.
This reverts revision 963357787, although without the phrasing "right into" since it's unnecessary in my opinion.
Change the title of the page so that its purpose is clearer, like maybe "Adding an image to your user page".
The "grammar fix" in revision 466584262 actually made the grammar worse, so I'd suggest reversing it.
from:
to create an account on Wikimedia Commonsautomatically, where Wikipedia's images are stored.
to:
to automatically create an account on Wikimedia Commons, where Wikipedia's images are stored.
I think that edit was done to avoid splitting an infinitive "to create", but it ended up splitting a parenthetical phrase "Wikimedia Commons, where ...".

It seems like the purpose of this page has gotten confused over time. I submitted an edit request, above, which lays out my arguments, but it was rejected since I didn't get consensus. In short, my point is that the page is intended to guide new users through uploading an image of themselves, but people have mistaken it for a general image uploading guide, and so edits to the page have made it confusing. Part of the problem is the ambiguous page title. What do you think?
I should also add, there's already a general image uploading guide.
For completeness, I want to reply to this:
not all image uploads will be portraits of the uploader - in fact, few will be because Wikipedia is not Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, Tiktok or any of the many other social networking sites that encourage you to submit selfies. Look at my uploads: not one of them depicts myself. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 12:48, 22 July 2021 (UTC)
That's totally missing my point. I'm saying, if you look at the context of this page linked from Template:New user bar, it's explicitly meant to encourage new users to submit a picture of themselves.
Click here to add an image of yourself (optional).
